When Sourcebooks sent out an email about upcoming ARCs available, I was a little nervous requesting this one because it was the second book in the series and I was worried that I might not be able to really get into it without reading the first book.
Fortunately, I dove right in and I’m so glad that I did because this book was so good! I absolutely LOVE books where people unknowingly meet celebrities. This one was so much fun because our two main characters, Alec and Felicity, met at a masquerade ball and had no idea who the other was and little did Felicity know that Alec was in one of her favourite bands.
This story could have gone so many different ways, and initially I read the synopsis for what must have been the first version of the story and it seemed so much like any other YA book, but this one had a bit of mystery woven into it, with the disappearance of Felicity’s sister. I loved that certain discoveries led to a road trip and band shenanigans, as well as lots of romance. I love celebrities being normal people in books, and this one was nice because not everyone was falling at Alec’s feet (honestly, some celebrity books have every single person the celebrity comes across knowing who they are and just fawning all over them – it would NOT have made sense with this one in my opinion, since I probably wouldn’t recognize certain members in my own favourite bands.).
I devoured this book in one day and while I thought I wasn’t going to like it, or that maybe it would be too juvenile for me, I totally loved it and it made me want to read more books with music in them because it’s just such a fun part of any book – there are a few song lists in the back and I’m TOTALLY building them up on Spotify so I can listen to them!
It’s so funny, reading reviews of this book it looks like it’s not the popular one in the series so far, so I’m glad that I didn’t read reviews prior to reading this one. Personally, I thought it was a lot of fun and even if it wasn’t totally realistic, it was just a light and fun contemporary that was perfect for a rainy day of reading. And I love that cover! I don’t usually do cutesy covers, but I think that one is adorable.
