review 1: I couldn't be more pleased with this splendid refresher on the Greek and Roman myths. This is broken down into sections on each of the Gods and Goddesses, as well as sections on heroes like Theseus and Perseus and on Lovers like Orpheus and Eurydice. Then the book covers the major stories: Hercules, Oedipus, Argonauts, Troy, Mycenae, Odysseus, Aeneas and the myths surrounding Rome from Romulus and Remus to Lucretia.I wanted more than an encyclopedic guide to these myths, a book like this one with lively and entertaining stories, retellings of the myths in much shorter refreshers. I realize I'll never have time enough to go back and read them all again (and a few for the first time). So this is perfect.Top rated recommendation.
review 2: I love Greek mythology so
... more, I'm biased. This book retells the myths in modern English with all the interesting parts that are left out of children's mythology books. At times it feels more like a book report on the myths; lacking the excitement of the original tales. The benefit to the style in which this book is written is many of the myths contradict themselves and have alternate endings, and Mr. Freeman addresses all of the endings and informs the reader which is the more common or popular version of the tale. less

A few typos and a bit of clunky grammar not due to translation, but a thoroughly enjoyable read!

I gave up on this. It was good, but not really anything new.

I guess I expected more. It's okay but disappointing.
