review 1: This book follows the previous Bernie Gunther story. Bernie leaves Cuba and gets caught by the Americans. Most of the book has Bernie talking to his interrogators about his various escapades and his time in Russian POW camps. He also finds himself being interrogated by the French as part of a complex CIA sting operation. In the end Bernie finds love and a way out of his problems as well as being sarcastic and, scaringly, with very honest opinions about the politics and values of the French, British, USA, Russia and Germany.
review 2: Une très belle surprise. Je m'attendais à un roman d'aventure/d'action, alors qu'en fait c'est un grand tableau historique brossé par un personnage pathétique mais aussi très drôle (Bernie Gunther). La grande force de ce ... moreroman, ce sont les dialogues... Absolument savoureux. Je n'aurais jamais pensé qu'un roman historique sur la IIe Guerre mondiale me captiverait à ce point. La clé, ce sont les réparties hilarantes de Bernie Gunther, qui nous surprend à chaque détour. C'est un homme dépassé par les événements qui a décidé de prendre la vie avec un gros grain de sel... Et la traduction française est étonnamment juste. À lire absolument ! less
