review 1: Kerr's main contribution to updating Chandler is a whole lot of scatological references, which don't really add a lot, and a few extra layers of cynicism, perhaps understandable given that he has to try to be an honest cop in Nazi Germany. But the negatives are more than outweighed by the positives, which include an amazing amount of detail, into daily life in Nazi Germany, before, during and after the war, some tight plotting, and some effective interweaving of real Nazis.
review 2: I am at an unusual loss for words here. Phillip Kerr has written a series about a man who was originally an honest detective in the Berlin police department in the early 1930's, quits and becomes a private detective as the police house gets ugly (becomes the SS and the Gestapo), and
... more is increasingly ruined by the Nazis. This is brilliant. Original, and absolutely relevant. When it comes to "noir" nothing touches a guy trying to make it as a decent man in Nazi Germany, though I never thought of that before. Phillip Kerr has brass balls for writing this, and the fact that he did it so well leaves me floored. I hesitate to say congratulations. But damn man. This is hands down one of the most powerful books I've ever read. Not for the sensitive. less

A must-read classic, all three of them, for any lover of noir. Nothing else to say, really...

Rather than being set in Berlin as usual, the novel is set in Vienna. That's it.
