review 1: I have been reading Grimm Tales for Young and Old, written by Philip Pullman. The book is a new angle of all our favorite fairy tales. What if fairy tales didn't always have good endings? What if fairy tales actually have bad endings that could lead into pain, heartbreak, misery, injuries, new lessons learned, or even lead to death? The book seems kinda lengthy but you can zip through it quickly. Naming off main characters is impossible. Each chapter is old with the old and in with the new. And each chapter ends on a bad note which shows, even some people that are labeled perfect can have bad endings or morals. The book induces lying, thievery, indirect murder, sarcasm, and of obviously death and pain. Which may sound weird or morbid at first but it's wonderful to get rid ... moreof the sugar coated happy endings in the original themes. It makes more sense and makes it completely realistic. My favorite story was "The cat and the mouse"
review 2: I did not know quite what to expect when I grabbed this off the shelves of my local bookstore. I have very little familiarity with all but the most ubiquitous fairy tales and wondered what I would gain from a collection of them. By the end, I had developed a deeper appreciation of the ones I knew and had been exposed to many fascinating tales that were entirely new to me. Pullman's commentary also helped me place the specific tales as well as fairy tales in general into a much clearer context than I had ever had. less
