review 1: The concept here is pretty good. The book tells us that Jesus had a twin brother named Christ who witnessed his brother's teachings and miracles and help record them in a way that would make them ring through history. In this telling, Jesus would have just been another forgotten preacher if not for the help, and ultimate betrayal, of his unknown twin brother Christ. It gives a new spin on some of the Bible's best-known stories and I admit that if I were more familiar with the Bible, maybe I would have liked this book a bit more. But judged solely on the 'This is a story' claim on the back cover, it was a story that started out strong but dragged in parts. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was just alright.

... morenongate's lovely myth series. Pullman is almost as good a reader as he is a writer. The story re-examines the gospels through the lens of Jesus's "scoundrel" twin -- Christ. The evil twin plot device may be overwrought, but Pullman handles it with dexterity. Christ is visited by a mysterious stranger who urges the well-meaning brother to write the story of the ill-tempered Jesus. The stranger urges Christ to embellish the physical story with some emotional "truths". Could the stranger be the devil or is he an angel? Pullman never answers the question, but he does get a chance to explore evil and the art of story telling. less
