review 1: Pullman's skill as a master storyteller is brought here to bear on Grimm's fairy tales, both familiar and less so.I own several books of fairy tales including the definitive The Annotated Brothers Grimm: The Bicentennial Edition: Bicentennial Edition, Expanded and Updated so why should I want this? Because Pullman doesn't just regurgitate Grimms' tales, he selects and retells them so beautifully. Because the book itself is beautiful, a large weighty hardback with a ribbon to mark the pages. And because after a hiatus I am now reading to my 9 year old again and together we are discovering / rediscovering the stories that are the underpinning of our culture. Many are disturbing and gruesome, all are annotated with good brief notes on the other versions of these tales in ex... moreistence
review 2: I take partial responsibility for the low rating of this book. I think I would have liked it better if I would have read a couple of stories at a time and interspersed it with reading from another book. But, I didn't. I just attempted to read it through and it about killed me.I am sure this version is pretty standard for Grimm Brothers' fairy tales and there were some stories that were quite entertaining. But, I can only handle so much of the same themes repeated over and over in a row before I am bored. Bravery, generosity, honesty, and...princesses. I get it, I get it.I knew this monthly reading theme was going to be a struggle, but I definitely do myself any favors in selecting this book. But, it is over, I survived, I am moving on. less
