review 1: In comparison to some other books I have read recently, I have to say it was refreshing to read smart people acting smart. Now I have plenty to grouse about, in particular when smart people suddenly do something so incredibly stupid that the only explanation is the author had reached and impasse and to move the story in the direction she wanted she had to have them be idiots... but I digress.A few minor points: I do not believe the CDC sends out individuals, ever (they send teams) – and if they did it would not be a statistician with no medical and limited field experience. Prion diseases are certainly real, but I am really suspicious of this ones scope and speed (doesn’t quite track, but its fiction and here I know I am nit-picking). To the good: the Vet comes across ... morevery nicely and the animals are portrayed quite realistically (the predators are attracted to humans not because they think to eat the humans but because they equate humans with feeding time and treats)The main point – Chapter 40 begins with our intrepid hero demanding access to the evil-doers lair, and when they are rebuffed (as they knew they would be as the hero had visited once before and been told in no uncertain terms to have a warrant next time) they threaten to call in backup (emphasis – THREATEN). The bluff works but they are required to surrender their telephones and recording devices (Which the dumb-arses DO!). They then have the audacity to be surprised when the 2D Corporate scumbag tosses them into a closet and uses them as guinea pigs for their experimental cure.I fear that cost the book a star. The only other major complaints was the obligatory “We humans are short-sighted prigs” speech given by our hero (I would have loved for they feisty Veterinarian to slap his fool face for that) and the forced physical/romantic relationship between our hero and heroine. In the end, it was a good book – 3 Solid Stars!Addendum - I have skimmed some other reviews and they pointed out errors I forgot to mention such as:The President does not have the authority to call out the National Guard. That is the purview of the state Governors. The Guard does not wear dress uniforms in the field. There is no such rank as a brigadier colonel. To defend the book from some other complaints I have to say the government's actions are reasonable and consistent, if harsh. Killing all the livestock and then all of the pets makes sense. I dont like it, but it IS logical.
review 2: This is a cautionary tale. Just because scientists can do something does that mean that they should. Add Greed to the equation and the results?Donna is a veterinarian. She travels a large area seeing to ranchers' stock as well as town pets.Mike works for the CDC. He is a computer analyst and searches for anomalies. He knows all the worst case scenarios that can be put into play if a disease gets out of control.Triple E is a private ranch/lab/hunter's mecca. Geneticists at Triple E are cloning animals for hunters with enough money to kill in a controlled environment at Triple E.Several of the hunters die from strokes or Parkinson's like neurological symptoms. But so are other people of all ages, sadly many children. Mike's computer is pointing out the start of a possible anomaly. Donna is seeing cattle and pets with similar neurological disease, but none of the tests she runs show what these animals are rapidly dying from. Then her co worker dies from it. Her own beloved pet dog dies. Mike travels to the area and he and Donna meet at a ranch by chance. They team up - she knows the area and the people, he knows the computer analysis and can track new cases - animal and human. The CDC come to the area and a test is finally found that links all the deaths together. Donna is starting to show some of the symptoms. Triple E blocks access as long as they can, and then they allow limited access. Meanwhile the US Government invokes Martial Law in 4 states and all cattle are the first to be killed. All travel, trade, stop with these 4 states.Mike and Donna believe something at Triple E is the cause. Triple E is looking for any money angle it can find so when this 'blip' blows over they can have the funds to start up elsewhere. Can this new disease (if it is a 'new' disease) be contained within the 4 quarantined states and within the mammal/human populations? The race is on to understand the nature of the beast and attempt a cure. Will Mike and Donna have a future? Will the animal kingdom or humans survive this lethal disease? Will Triple E manage to hide their part in all of this? Will they sell their research in part to the highest bidder, regardless of the ethics involved? The ending is open. Just as the questions are many in this novel, some of the answers are left to the reader to decide and other questions are not answered at all.I found this to be an excellent and compelling medical thriller. It is frightening because as a reader I know it could happen. less

Actually didn't read the last 1/4 of the book. Just couldn't ever 'get into it'.
