review 1: YA books are always tough for me. The writing and overall structure are a little too clean, the narrative too straightforward. So I struggle but thought this story had an interesting premise. I've been a big mythology fan ever since I was young, but this story lacks any interesting characters and the driving force of revenge is hammered in again and again with the character constantly saying "I want revenge" so much I found my eyes glazing over. And that's fine. I get that this book isn't written for me as it's for young adults but as an adult reader I just couldn't get into it. One of the things that have always hampered my enjoyment of YA titles are the YA characters. I dislike hearing teenagers talk in real life as they act like how I was as a kid, selfish, irrational, ... moreand repetitive. As you grow older and gain more life experiences you hopefully loose those tendencies. So to read a story where the main character is incredibly selfish and self serving, a story of people suddenly becoming friends and willing to die for one another, it rings hollow for me. But again I'm not the target audience. If you're a teen I can see you enjoying this adventure as it has intrigue, dread and heroism. It has the markings of a great YA book, but just wasn't for me.
review 2: Hoover's adventure/fantasy series has plenty of action and links to history and mythology to keep young fans of Percy Jackson happy. Historical facts are understandably set aside in favor of an alternate reality in which Tut is an immortal teenager living in contemporary America. Tut himself doesn't come across as a particularly distinct character, but most readers will be content with the adventure, humorous sidekicks, and swift-moving plot. A good option for those looking for a new series. less
