review 1: In a country being destroyed by pollution, climate change, and a repressive government, scientists genetically alter their children so they can live in the ocean and after arming them with survival equipment which includes, (delightfully), telepathic dolphins, direct them to swim through dangerous waters to a spot off the coast of northern California to start a new colony. An exciting aquatic adventure, I look forward to the sequel next year.
review 2: Like many others, I agree this book gets off to a slow start. In fact, both of my own children abandoned it-- I'm trying to get them to reconsider. Don't give up on it too early! The story has enough adventure, realism, and escapism to please variety of middle grade audience. Sweet romance, danger, sharks.
... more.. a little of everything. Once I got past the first few chapters, I was hooked, but it may take an oral reading to hook the kids. Unanswered questions leave me thinking.... sequel? Love that there is "another world" factor at work here- great writing. less
