review 2: *I received a free copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads.*This is volume 4 in the Morganville Vampires series and contains Fade Out and Kiss of Death.Fade OutIn Fade Out, Claire and the gang are getting back to their normal lives…or normal for them anyway. There is a somewhat tentative peace between humans and vampires at the moment, but it could fall apart at any second. Claire is continuing her work with the moderately sane Myrnin and his crazy supercomputer, Ada. (It’s a really complicated, disturbing relationship. You’ll just have to read about this one for yourself.) Things are going well with Claire and her boyfriend, Shane. Michael is getting some serious attention for his music. And Eve has just been cast as Blanche DuBois in the town’s production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Seems super, right? Well, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now, things are not quite as super as they seem. One of Eve’s co-stars in Streetcar is an enigmatic girl named Kim. Everyone seems to like Kim…except Claire, especially when she discovers that Kim and Shane have history. Claire just knows that Kim is rotten to the core, but she doesn’t want to seem like a super-jealous twit, so she keeps her mouth shut for the most part. Until she discovers what Kim’s been up to in Morganville. (No, I’m not going to tell you. That would ruin the whole book for you.) Claire knows Kim and whoever is working with her must be stopped, but how?And that’s not all folks! Remember Myrnin’s supercomputer, Ada? Well, she’s officially gone off her nut and is determined to kill Claire so that she can have Myrnin all to herself. Now, I know you’re asking, “How is this possible? Ada is just a computer.” Have you not been paying attention? Nothing is really what it seems in Morganville, and Claire and the gang will have to use all their wits, plus some dealings with a few unsavory characters, to get out of this mess in tact. Kiss of DeathIn Kiss of Death, the eighth book in Rachel Caine’s Morganville Vampires series, Claire, Michael, Shane, and Eve are facing the prospect of actually getting to leave Morganville for a while. Michael is finally getting his shot at becoming a rock star, and Claire and the gang just might get to go along for the ride. There’s one catch, though. Oliver–scary vampire with an attitude–is to be their chaperone. Even with this unwelcome twist, the gang just cannot pass up this opportunity. A chance for Michael to really make it in the music business and for them to get out of Morganville? It’s really a no-brainer.So, Claire and her merry band of misfits take off for Dallas, with Oliver as their surly companion. Surely things are going to be super-duper and all happy for them, right? Um, if you believe that, you might want to go back and read the first seven books of this series. Of course things aren’t going to go smoothly! Wake up! Almost immediately, trouble finds our travelers. They are nearly assaulted at what can only be described as a redneck hangout. (Shout out to all my redneck friends out there! I live in good ol’ South Carolina, so there are a few of them.) Next, Eve’s car gets burned to a crisp. Then, they stumble upon a whole different kind of trouble. Well, maybe it’s not so different for them…It seems a group of Morganville’s unhappy vampire citizens have skipped town. They’re seeking freedom from Amelie and the rules of Morganville. Well, they may just get more than they bargained for when they encounter Claire, her friends, and a new threat that no one really anticipated (or so we think). What will become of Claire and her friends? How will the “escapees” from Morganville deal with their new-found freedom? What is this new threat, and do our fine friends have any hope of battling something so much stronger than them? Will Michael ever make it to Dallas to finally record his music? Will our friends ever make it back to Morganville? Do they even want to? less
