review 1: This story is packed full of potential, but I can't get passed the amateurish writing. The narrative is packed full of cliches (and not in a good way) and the characters feel bland, and subparr. I don't dislike the book, but I feel like I had it hyped up for me, and I can only feel disappointment. I can definitely see how this book could work for someone else. Someone who might be looking for a book that's a romance first and a half baked fantasy second.
review 2: 2.5 StarsI was so torn throughout this book. It was hard for me to get into because I really strongly disliked the love interest from the very beginning. He was arrogant in a demanding and childish way. And genuinely a complete jackass. And I found it hard to respect a protagonist that was so emotional
... morely wishy-washy. "I love him, I hate him". "Even when he treats me like dirt, I am drawn to him inexplicably." Ugh. Seriously? As a reader, I am very drawn to strong, kiss-ass female protagonist and Eden does not fit that description. She lacks intuition, basic intelligence, and fire. (Don't mistake reckless bull-headedness for fire.) She is petulant and childish throughout the book. Stomping her foot, ignoring basic instructions, and generally lacking class.I know this sounds harsh. I didn't hate the story, I am a sucker for a story line where a powerful girl is poised to save the world. 3/4 of the way through the book, I started to get more interested. The formerly annoying and unlikable love interest, Kiran, showed some actual positive personality traits and Eden finally chose a direction for her feelings. Interesting tidbits about her parents and her destiny drew me in against my will. I am still unsure whether I will continue this series. I will let it ruminate for a while and if I continue to think about the fate of Eden and Kiran, then I will probably read on. With a book like this, it depends entirely on whether the story stays with me. less
