review 1: This is a scary book. It reminds me of a modern day 1984, where people are sucked into a system in which your popularity is the key to success. The majority of the story is set in an abandoned mall that has been rehabilitated to be a high school called The Game. the main character, "Kid", is just trying to get by through her HS experience, without worrying about getting sponsored. She doesn't particularly want to be part of the popular crowd, so she purposely lays low. The characters use concepts such as the Network, intouch, notebook, which are used similarly like Facebook, Twitter and iPads, which is part of the scary aspect of the story, because our soxiety might very well just come to this at some point in the future. This is a great book that I highly recommend for b... moreoth teens and adults.
review 2: As a teacher, I enjoyed the premise of the book - the Games were the lessons. However I did not like the idea that the point of the games was manipulative. Some of the "lessons" were actually quite innovative: Constructing robots for competitions, a simulator ride dependent on solving math equations, workshops to create and design clothing or apps, etc....The plot, however, was rather predictable, and the "villain" of the piece was one dimensional. I was disappointed in the ending. However, this book was a quick read, and I do recommend it to anyone interested in seeing a model for schools in which activities take the place of lectures, students have some control in their learning, and communication via Twitter/Facebook-like platforms is the norm. less
