review 1: An "interesting" book...There were parts of it that I found fascinating and absorbing. It's hard to fully appreciate what it must be like to have no rights, no vote, no voice, no life other than that bestowed upon you by your husband, father, male boss. The author did a good job of describing the oppressive life and the futility of resistance if you were female in the early 1900's. However, there were many parts that I skimmed over because they were of no interest to me at all. I thought the German folklore was a boring distraction and found her relationship with Edwin to be confusing and unlikely. (I did like the judge in the divorce hearing. He's my kind of legal dude - able to cut through the BS to get to the truth of the matter.)
review 2: I was stuck betw
... moreeen 2 and 3 stars but went for 3 mainly because this is a very important topic and was based on actual events. I thought Marie's character could have been developed much more. There are horrific things that happen with no explanation or follow up. I would have liked to see Marie stand up to her father and take a stronger position with Martha. I do think for a first novel the author does illicit feelings about the characters. I felt that there was no real turning point or lesson in the end. less
