review 1: I liked not loved ... I needed to see another viewpoint with the new age movement . His tone with Oprah and Chopra are amusing at times . He could have completely left their names out of the entire book , and spoke of the falsehood within the new spirituality. Sadly I won't keep this book because real apologetic books IMO read like a text book. He had some wonderful arguments but they came across so revengeful . I don't want to read about Oprah or Chopra ! I want to read about the pantheism worldviews & the East from someone who is from the East and has left the Eastern religious dialogue behind . Problem is he is right on about the hypocrisy within the new age movement ie " when Mother Earth acts bad why do we blame father God?" As well as the hypocrisy that lies within... more every atheist.... But what about the hypocrisy within Christianity ? A few things I would ask Ravi regarding some of his statements : the Jesus of the new spirituality is a Jesus of myth not fact .My question: Well unfortunately the Jesus ( Yeshua ) of Christianity is a myth as well. He is a false Greek hybrid of a Hebrew messiah . So why not mention that ?To Ravi: Buddha would probably not recognize Buddhism for what it is today because of the dramatic changes as it left Hinduism and entered china and japan ? My question : would you agree that Yeshua would not recognize a Sunday Christian coffee house service as well? Similar to the change that Christianity made to the biblical practice and theory from its Hebraic perspective and origins ? .. You mean that kind of unrecognizable ? I'm not picking a theological fight here but for someone who calls themselves an apologetic it's hard for me to not see the errors of ones doctrine. I hate how his answer to every problem is "Christianity" or Christians .. How about "believers" the answer is NOT Christianity ... The answer is a devout , loving connection with the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob .. Not another man made doctrinal religion . Maybe that's why the church is struggling so badly with the new age scene is because it has no real structure . He talks about morals and atheist having no morals but with the "law done away with " Christians have no morals as well . With no law we can now kill each other , rape, cheat, steal and lie ... It's fine Jesus came so we could eat pork chops and shrimp and live life freely ? Right ? Makes sense . Love is the letter of the law . To love yourself you must love God because you are made in his image , to love others you must love God because they are made in his image .... To love God is to obey him as well . What do You obey if the law has been done away with? Because now I do not need to love God .Luckily I do love God ... :)
review 2: "Why Jesus?" by Ravi Zacharias is an excellent apologetic work against the New Spirituality/New Age movements. He effectively dissects the core beliefs and problems with these new forms of thought and faith utilizing his intellect and vast knowledge of world religions, and adds to the ever-existing question: why Jesus? Now, I must say a quick word about this book; Christian bias is very present within this work. While Mr. Zacharias is no foolish zealot, he is not a rationalist from the sidelines, but instead a "gladiator in the arena", if you will. While I highly doubt any peoples but Christians would come across this book, I felt like I should address this nonetheless. So, in summary, if you're looking for an wise apologist's insight into the mysticism of the "New" movements and Eastern spirituality in general, this book will be an edifying experience for you, and I hope that you will enjoy it and take away from it as much as I did. less
