review 1: This a book that is entwined with family relationships. The major setting is on an island in Croatia. The author captured the beauty of the island along with the political upheaval. It involves three generations. Some of the family escaped and went to America and weren't heard from for years. The remaining family had to live in suppression. Due to an abusive marriage the granddaughters lived with on the island with their grandparents. Eventually they hear from American. There is such a difference between these two worlds just like the sisters that are the main characters.

I liked the characters, but was not too surprised by their actions. The story is excellent in reminding us how innocent individuals are hurt by war, which in turn causes strife in families. Only reason that I am not going to suggest that my book group read this is that I do not want to read the novel for a second time. less
