“In his shoes” Project – Heck Tate
Mr. Heck Tate, aka the Maycomb County Sheriff, might not be a major character in “To Kill a Mockingbird” but he makes some parts of the book better by introducing new facts about the situation, as in the “Mad Dog” scene. Here, Heck gives the gun to atticus to shoot since the dog was so far away. This introduced a new gift about atticus that his children didn’t know about. The following paragraphs are going to be all about Heck and how he contributed to the plot. Also, I’m going to go a little deeper into his character and personality traits. Basically, you will know what it’s like to be the Maycomb County Sheriff.

Heck Tate is one character that is hard to define. His main purpose is to maintain order and peace in Maycomb. There are many different sides to his personality, sometimes he’s serious, and sometimes he has a sense of humor. Below are some quotes from “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

“ Let the dead bury the dead this time, Mr. Finch.” -here heck is trying to avoid the attention and the trouble that would come with an investigation on Bob’s death. He truly wants to let it be.

“You haven’t forgot much. Mr. Finch. They say it never leaves you.” -this is where his sense of humor comes in. He’s joking around around with him about his aim. Also this shows that Heck has been around long enough to hear many good things about Atticus.

“I don’t look for any trouble, but i can’t guarantee there won’t be any.”- his serious side comes to the light when talking about Tom Robinson getting transferred to Maycomb county jail. He’s basically giving Mr. finch a warning. Overall, Mr. Heck Tate has a really good personality and seemed to side with the Finchs most of the time. He seemed like a friendly person to all, even the ones who weren’t so friendly to him.

For my shoes I used an old pair of dress like shoes considering Heck was the sheriff so he was most likely dressed well all the time. I wrote many things on the sides of the shoes like the word “loyalty.” I chose this word because Heck remained loyal to his beliefs even though it wasn’t the popular ones. He remained true to Atticus when Tom was moved to the Maycomb jail and warned him that there was talk of trouble. Connecting the shoes are a pair of handcuffs with the words “by law” on them. This represents how Heck is bound by the law meaning he can’t tell anything but the truth when it comes to crimes. I put the key to the handcuffs in the middle of the chain to represent how he broke that promise to the law to protect Boo Radley when Bob Ewell was murdered. “For once, if you don’t see it my way, there’s not much you can do about it.” This quote was said on the Finch’s front porch when Heck was trying to tell Atticus that Bob fell on his knife. I painted the bottom of the shoes red to show all of the crime Heck steps in, like the scene where Tom got caught “raping” Mayella, and when Bob was stabbed. Showing that he was a part of almost everything big that happened around there whether it was good or bad. The base that holds the shoes is black because black shows that Heck was a strong power head and he has a lot of authority.

Overall Mr. Heck Tate is a really good man who showed his loyalty and strength in hard times. He is a very kind hearted individual with good intentions but people don’t see him this way because this title makes people believe he is a mean man with a dark soul. Everyone can learn a lot from a man like Heck.
