“Lost in a Book” Book Review

“She loved the feeling she got every time she picked one up – the feeling of holding an entire world in her hands.”
– Lost in a Book, Jennifer Donnelly

Lost in a Book is a cute novel that takes place in the Beauty and the Beast universe. With its cheesy plotline and minimal character development, this book is suited for a younger audience. Jennifer Donnelly takes the characters everyone knows and loves and expands upon what could have happened while Belle was trapped in the castle. It nods to the recent movie adaptation, most prominently seen in the title of the book Belle finds called Nevermore. Even though the hardcover version contains over 300 pages, the font is fairly larger and its simplicity makes for an easy and fast read.

The plot was intriguing, however, I do wish the plot contained more depth and detail. But since the intended audience is younger, I understand her decision to keep it simple. That being said, the plot was thorough and well developed. It was an interesting take on the story I know so well, especially due to the author staying true to the original characters’ personalities. It is a book I am glad I read, but not one I would reread unless I was doing so with a younger audience.

 Recommended for:

  • Elementary/Middle school age
  • Young adult
  • Disney fans

About the Book:
An original addition to the beloved Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, Lost in a Book follows the lonely, bookish Belle as she finds an enchanted book in the Beast’s library called Nevermore that carries her into a glittering new world. There, Belle is befriended by a mysterious countess who offers her the life she’s always dreamed of.

But Nevermore is not what it seems, and the more time Belle spends there, the harder it is to leave. Good stories take hold of us and never let us go, and once Belle becomes lost in this book, she may never find her way out again.

This deluxe hardcover novel expands upon the beautiful story and world seen in the new Walt Disney Studios’ film, Beauty and the Beast.
