My daily post theme for 2017 is on Colleges and Universities.
The plan for starting my blog back in 2014 was at the urging of fellow coaching colleagues to share posts on leadership and/or motivation. Somehow that idea got derailed and turned into daily posts on one theme for an entire year.
In 2014 my daily posts were on the “Beer of the Day”, 2015 it was “A Friend of a Friend”, 2016 I wrote about “North Carolina”, and for 2017 I will focus on “Colleges and Universities”.
I have been associated with colleges since I was 18 and I love them. I have coached/worked at four different universities and in my professional and personal travels visited 100’s more. Each college has something in its history that I want to share that to me make it unique or personal.

Location: Memphis TN
On Sunday I was cooking “Beer Can Chicken” on the grill and the recipe I like to utilize calls for a Memphis Rub. I would share the recipe for the rub well you know the rest of the story. I found a podcast called Chicken and Beer maybe they can help.
I made a note to myself on Sunday that a future post on a college would be about Memphis. Photos below are of the rub and the chicken as a finished product.
University of Memphis was known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Found it interesting that when the school was founded they choose blue and gray as the school colors. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict.
In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College. Photo below from 1928.
In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first black students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. In 1994 MSU became the University of Memphis,
With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students the campus today does not look like it did in the 1920’s.
Notable Memphis alums include NFL players DeAngelo Williams (Pittsburgh) and Stephen Gostkowski (New England). Also the late Senator Fred Thompson who went on to star in the TV show Law and Order along with a number of movies.
