review 1: Solid 4.5 stars for the series. LOVED these books!Okay I've heard about these books for awhile (The Evan Arden series), but I've never gotten around to reading them... but I had bought the Surviving Raine book and then heard that the second one to that series was going to feature Evan Arden and everyone was flipping out about that... so I decided before I read the Surviving Raine books- I would first read the Evan Arden series... and four books later I am KICKING myself for waiting so long!!! I LOVED THESE BOOKS. Shay Savage just went on my list of automatic preorders. LOVED her writing. Book (novella) 1. Otherwise Alone. Amazing. Loved that Evan was so flawed. He's an ex military guy who now works for the mafia. Loved the fast pace story. It was seriously excit... moreing. And the first book was a novella introducing Evan and Lia, and of course Odin :) And wow. Some introduction. It's amazing it was a novella- the character development of Evan was AWESOME. You get a feeling for who he really is and the world he lives in right away. Hooked. LOVED THIS BOOK. Was so glad I didn't have to wait for the next few :)Book 2. Otherwise Occupied. So this one was a lot... erm... grittier. It focuses mostly on Evan and how he is coping with his life as a mafia hit man and his demons from his military past. This book also shows exactly how much Lia has affected Evan even though she's really not in this book much at the beginning. THAT ENDING. Wowza. Shows exactly how effed up our Hero is!Book 3- Otherwise Unharmed. This deals with the fallout from Evan's actions in Book 2 and how he deals with both his mafia bosses/family and his military past. This one also does an amazing job focusing on Evan and Lia's developing relationship and just how much she means to him.Book 4 (novella)- Uncockblockable. this is Nick's story and takes place between books 2 and 3. Gives a little more insight into the chicago mob, Evan's personality (especially from others viewpoint), and Nick. Loved getting a little more from these characters.
review 2: The thing I really like about this series so far is how deep we get inside the hero's (err...antihero's) head. I don't think he would be a redeemable character if we weren't privy to his innermost thoughts and struggles. That he is redeemable just shows how great a writer Shay Savage is. The reason I dinged this one a star is because of the length of time it took me to finish it. It isn't a long book, and yet it took me a couple of weeks to get through, because things started to lag about a third of the way in. But once it picked up, boy did it pick up! The ending was just one "holy shit" moment after another. I can't wait to see how all of this is going to be resolved. less
