Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes
review 1: This is the ninth of Laurie R. King's series of suspense novels about Mary Russell, a young protege of the retired detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes eventually marries her, and she becomes Holmes's partner and a skilled operative in her own right. The Russell stories are probably my favorite Holmesian derivative series. Russell is a great character, and the portrayal of an aging Holmes is true to the "canonical" Doyle novels, but also engagingly human and nuanced. In "The Language of Bees," Holmes and Russell come to the aid of Damian Adler, Holmes's long-lost son fathered with (the deceased) Irene Adler. I believe that King identifies her Russell stories as "suspense" novels rather than mysteries. This label fits "The Language of Bees," in that the story focuses on the purs... moreuit of a villain and the rescue of a child, rather than a complex Sherlockian-style puzzle. One of the great sections of this book is the account of Russell's white-knuckled air journey from London to the Orkneys. The story is set in 1924, when aircraft and the pilots who flew them were not necessarily as reliable as the ones we use today.ARK
review 2: This is a good effort by King, with Holmes son appearing for the first time ever, as far as I know, and a grand daughter too, Damian and Estelle. The weirdness of the cult/religion of The Master, unknown until the last 20% of the book, had me wondering and curious--good mystery and suspense. The plot revolves around the son's return, after 5 years when Holmes knew about him for the first time, and then his reappearance in Holmes lives, only to disappear again under strange circumstances. less
