50 Book Pledge Featured Read: Mississippi Blood

Happy Monday, Savvy Readers!

Even though it’s officially Spring, it’s still cold and that means curling up in our favourite chair and reading a good book. And this book will make you want to stay in that chair until you’re finished. On March 21st, the final book in Greg Iles’ Natchez Burning Trilogy, Mississippi Blood, was finally released! This trilogy has been seven years in the making and it’s finally complete.

Mississippi Blood takes place in a small town in the American Deep South called Natchez. Everything culminates in this book during one of the best literary trials since To Kill a Mockingbird. You know exactly what you want to happen but you’re kind of just along for the ride here.

While there’s a lot of legal jargon that’s involved, Iles explains everything so well so you never feel left out. In fact, I definitely learned a lot, which is always a plus when you’re reading a good book. But don’t worry – it’s not all courtroom drama. The trial is sandwiched between some pretty epic action that’s based off of the events that led to the trial, as well as events from the first two books.

Being based in the Deep South, there is a lot of gun violence and white supremacy violence. While it was quite surprising to me, I felt that it went with the story, especially since that is pretty much the backbone of the entire trilogy. This racial plot point adds to the comparison of Mississippi Blood and To Kill a Mockingbird. As this is being compared to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, you can definitely expect the progressive Penn and his family to be in a constant struggle with white supremacist gang groups.

If you’re looking for a book that will make you stay up late frantically racing to the end, this is it. Mississippi Blood will add some much needed excitement while we all wait for the evenings to warm up. If you end up finishing the Natchez Burning Trilogy, let us know in the comments below or on Twitter @SavvyReader!
