Savvy Readers, can you believe it’s already MID-AUGUST!?!? Me either. But on the bright side, we’re way on track with our 50 Book Pledge community goal. Are you on track with your own? If you’re not, we have the perfect read for you to pick up (and we know you’ll be dying to post-reading our review)…
The Lost Ones by Sheena Kamal is for readers of psychological suspense and thrillers like Alafair Burke’s The Ex.
It’s late. The phone rings. You answer. The man on the other end says his daughter is missing. Your daughter. The baby you gave away over fifteen years ago. What do you do?
Nora Watts has dreaded this phone call since she gave up her daughter, Bonnie, all those years ago. The police consider her a chronic runaway and don’t look for her anymore. Bonnie’s desperate adoptive parents reach out to Nora Watts, her birth mother, as a last hope.
As a biracial product of the foster system herself, Nora knows what happens to vulnerable girls on the streets. So Nora sets out to find Bonnie with her only companion, her dog Whisper, knowing that she risks opening wounds that have never really healed.
The search for Bonnie leads Nora on a journey of deception and violence. One of my favourite parts of this book is how she travels through Canada—rainy Vancouver, the mountains, and a beautiful (but dangerous) island—and how Kamal adds in some history and issues of the country, too.
And she does this all this to save a girl she wishes had never been born…
The short chapters in this book will pull you in so quickly. I was halfway through the book before I realized how much I had read in one sitting! Nora is such a unique character—truly unlike any other I’ve read about before. She’s broken and damaged in so many ways but she’s a hero worth admiring. And she makes this a powerful (though painful) story to indulge in.
The Lost Ones was a Bustle best book of July and was recommended for summer reading by TIME Magazine (and us, of course!). Tell us in the comments below or on Twitter @SavvyReader if this one is on your TBR, or what you thought if you’ve already read it!
