A New Faire

Yesterday I finally finished my big beading project, which was a good thing because today I wore the dress. I got up early (for a Saturday) and got ready to drive up to Mount Pleasant, the town where a new Renaissance Festival started up today. It’s about an hour and a half drive.

I was really looking forward to it because I knew that several familiar faces would be there. The lady who owns it once played the queen at the now-vanished Four Winds Faire, so she drew on her connections from those days to staff her new faire.

It was a beautiful drive through sunshine to the Canterbury Renaissance Festival. For a faire in its first year, it already has a surprising amount of buildings and landscaping. What it doesn’t have is shade! Trees have been planted, but they are too small to be of any use at the present. So after listening to my first show, I was already wilting.

I greatly enjoyed getting to see and hear old friends play and sing today.

The heat was oppressive, which is normal for this time of year, but knowing that doesn’t make it more enjoyable. At one point I sneaked out to my car, started it up, and sat enjoying the air conditioning for a few minutes.

There were some great vendors, including a ceramic artist. (Handmade pottery is one of my weaknesses.) They did have some kind of joust demonstration, but due to the lack of both shade and adequate seating, I missed it.

By the middle of the afternoon, I was so hot I decided to leave, even though I would have liked to stay and hear more music. Maybe next time I go it won’t be so hot!
