AD5801 Documentary Perspectives | Photo Book Research

As this module’s final product is a photo book, I think it’s important to research photo books I enjoy looking at. This way, I will have a better idea on the kind of overall aesthetic I want when it comes to constructing it.

I personally own several of  Hoxton Mini Press books, and I love the aesthetic of them. I also like the sizes that they are produced in, and I want to take inspiration from this when deciding on what size I want for my photo book.

As my subject is very intimate and close, I think that it would be inappropriate to produce a think and large photo book. I don’t think the images would be as successful if they were blown up, because the idea behind a lot of the shots is that we’re seeing something that we should only see when we know a person, and have a bond with them. I think if I made the images large, it would lose the intimate, close feel.

This post is primaarily about the size I’d like my photo book to be.

Hoxton Mini Press’ smallest books are 22cm long:

The 2 above books are 22X14 cm. These are small books, and I think for the book on the left in particular being more intimate, this size is effective. I think this size is worth considering because, as previously mentioned, the project is intimate, and I think that needs to be reflected in the book size.

The next size up that they offer is 23X16cm. While this is only slightly bigger on numbers, I think that this is a noticeable size difference.

This is also a size worth considering, as they still feel like intimate books, but they provide a slightly bigger space for printing. I think this may be worthwhile if I use some full bleed images, as I have planned to do, particularly with landscape shots as I want to use them as chapters.

Here are the two different sizes for comparison purposes:

Finally, I looked at ‘Humans Of New York’. This book is less portrait. Although it isn’t square, it is closer to square in shape than the Hoxton Mini Press books:

This book is 18X32 cm. It is also a considerably thicker book than the previous ones, which may be why it feels so bulky. This, however has put me off using this size. I don’t have enough images, nor do I think it is needed for so many pictures to be included in a photo books.

Here are the 3 books for comparison:

I think based on these 3 sizes, I will choose either the first or second smallest. This is because I want the images included in my photo book to continue to have the intimate feel that they currently do. Although I could make the images smaller in the larger book, I would be at risk of having too much negative space, and for the book to feel too bare.
