review 1: I usually opt for the originals when it comes to stuff, including books. However, I loved this book. It's a wonderful retelling that I thought was a nice blend of the original story premise with a splash of the dystopian genre- while the world the story was based in was very much the foundation of the story, I didn't feel that the story itself was overpowered by that. I was anticipating overplayed romance, but the book surprised me, being much more understated and sweet, and I quite liked it. Overall, I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it to anyone with a hankering for something a little understated but equally emotional.
review 2: Based on Jane Austen's Persuasion, this dystopian adventure centers around a world devastated by the "reduction." Aft... moreer too much genetic manipulation, especially among humans, a drastic reaction occurred genetically rendering much of the population reduced, meaning they could not speak or function normally. Society outlawed all technological innovations, especially genetic tampering, and now the world is ruled by the Luddites, an upper class who cares for and enslaves the reduced population. But Reduced people are occasionally having "normal" babies. This group refuses to be enslaved and is starting to rebel. Elliott, daughter of a Luddite farmer, has fallen in love with one of these new offspring of the reduced but is torn when he joins the rebellion and turns on her. Constrained by their respective societies, they are at odds with each other. Can Elliott manage escape her bullying father and save the farm? Well written and full of twists and turns, this is a modern take on the traditional love story. upper middle/high school less
