Angelfall Trilogy

I began reading the Angelfall trilogy by Susan Ee way back in September 2014 and I honestly don’t know why I only gave it 3 stars back then. As I wanted to come back to this series I only read a summary of the first book in order to remember some of the action (yes, I am not a big fan of re-reading books…). That is why I cannot give a more detailed review but what I can say is that after reading the summary and reminding myself the story plot I really don’t understand why I didn’t enjoy it that much.

Coming back to the present day, I gave World After 5 stars. I fell in love with the world and its characters. Penryn is still an amazing and strong girl for what she’s been through and for how many responsibilities she carries for a seventeen year old. She and Raffe make and incredible duo. The chemistry between them is good: they care for each other although they should be enemies and they are true fighters. At the beginning of this book, I was sad that Raffe wasn’t present but as soon as he made his appearance things were getting better. His personality, sassiness, looks and just everything else makes him a powerful archangel with a touch of romanticism and cuteness. He knows how to treat a girl and the scenes with him and Penryn are always a joy to read, either it is action or some romantic scenes. The action happens at a nice pace, not too fast nor too slow, there is plenty of action. You get easily attached to many of the characters through their background story but there were some moments when I got a bit confused by some newly introduced characters, which didn’t have a name (Penryn just named them after their characteristics).

The mix with some horror and gore elements were so well done. You could just imagine and feel like how it would be in a apocalyptic world, where you don’t know how crazy people can get. Beside the angels we have other fantastical creatures, which also can do almost everything bad to you. These things just make it feel more realistic and it doesn’t feel like, even though the world is ending, everything is still in the limits of normality. People can do horrible things to save themselves and the fantasy creatures are unforeseeable.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

! I will be talking about spoilers that happen near the end of the book, so if you do not wish to read them then don’t go further !

The last volume, End of Days, deserves 4.5 stars. As much as I love the characters and the story, the end disappointed me somehow. I expected something more and I didn’t expect that it would go down and end so quickly. The characters did get their happy endings: Penryn and Raffe got eventually together, sadly Raffe didn’t got to keep his angel wings, Paige is better, Penryn’s mom is one strong and spectacular lady and Raffe’s Watchers are free. I do feel bad about Beliel, I really hoped he would become a better person and not let the past conquer him, also him being used like that by the other characters felt wrong for me. Yes, I know that not everyone can have a happy ending (harsh reality).

*END OF SPOILERS*

There were some moments where I wished things would move a little faster but we got our fair share of action. What I mean is that the wrong moments were taking too long and some other more important situations were resolved to quickly.

In any case, this trilogy will definitely have a place in my favorite ones I’ve read until now. Maybe I am feeling bittersweet because it ended. I wanted to hear Raffe’s jokes and sassiness more but I don’t think I would like to read more horror scenes.

I just wish that more people read these books because they are just amazing and a fast read as it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
