Astonishing X-Men Vol. 1: Gifted by Joss Whedon | REVIEW & DISCUSSION

Hey, guys! I am super excited to talk about the first volume in the Astonishing X-Men series as I am a huge fan of X-Men in general. I wasn’t sure if I would like this, honestly. Nothing could really live up to the amazingness of the movies, but this was still pretty good! I really enjoyed it, surprisingly. But let’s go ahead and jump right into the review!

Synopsis:

” Cyclops and Emma Frost re-form the X-Men with the express purpose of “astonishing” the world. But when breaking news regarding the mutant gene unexpectedly hits the airwaves, will it derail their new plans before they even get started?”

My Thoughts:

I actually was surprised by this one. I really enjoyed it. I think the plot is going in an interesting direction, and it’s interesting to see the direction the characters are going in this story. Originally, I only read the first comic in this series, and I wasn’t a huge fan of it, but I really loved the entirety of this first volume. I really loved seeing the dynamics between all of the characters, and I became very invested very fast.

I do have one complaint, though. And I hate to say this. But I honestly find Logan (Wolverine) to be super freaking annoying. I really was not a huge fan of his character and his stupid obsession with Jean Grey. It was just annoying to see him arguing with Scott over Jean when the girl is dead. Like, come the fuck on. I just really didn’t like the scenes with him in them, which was super disappointing because he was my favorite character in the movies. This definitely makes it apparent they made him way more decent in the movies…

I do think I am missing parts of the backstory, but I really didn’t care because I fell in love with these characters anyway. I really loved Kitty Pryde and I actually did not know very much about her, but I am super in love with her character now. She ended up being the sensible one of the X-Men because the majority of the other ones had questionable morals, and I honestly thought they should listen to her more than they did.

But my God, I still hate freaking Emma Frost. Like I still think she’s a bitch. I can’t believe who she is sleeping with. I don’t understand why the fuck that person is sleeping with her. Like it makes me so heated because I just hate her character. And I know she is supposedly on the good side right now, but I don’t buy it, at all. I think she is a double agent who is still working for the bad guys, and until proven otherwise (with a ton of substantial proof), I will not change my mind about this. I still think she’s an evil bitch.

I also really loved the art style. It definitely fits the theme of X-Men. I liked the simplicity of it, and I honestly thought the portrayal of The Beast was actually really funny because he looks so adorable in the comics, but he is supposed to be like scary-looking, and I just thought it was super ironic. It had really accurate portrayals of the characters, which I really appreciated.

But overall, I really enjoyed the storyline, the characters, the world, and the art style as well as the writing. I am super excited to read the next volume, and I definitely recommend you check this out!

And there you have it! That was my review of the first volume in the Astonishing X-Men series by Joss Whedon. Who is your favorite X-Men character? Comment down below! I would love to know. And that is going to be it for this review today. Thank you all so much for reading this, I hope you enjoyed it, and I will see you next time!
