Hello, friends! It has been a hot minute (maybe a little more) since my last post, and in the spirit of a new year and with renewed fervor, I am returning to semi-regular blog posting.
So, what has happened since we last spoke over a year ago?
Life update: I’m still in residency but on track to finish mid-2018! Which means I am now interviewing for jobs, a task which is both exciting and terrifying. More on that to come in a future post. I’m also starting to study for boards, a serious investment considering that test costs $1400 (woof).
Financial update: Since becoming net worth zero, I have grown my stash considerably thanks to a strong US market and some side hustling. I am now at a point I had only hoped to reach at the end of residency, with six-ish months to go! On one hand, I feel like I have relaxed a little bit in that I don’t stress quite as much about most purchases. On the other hand, I am worried about getting too lax and losing momentum! This month I plan to look at my savings/spending in detail for the past year (utilizing the beauty of technology like Personal Capital) to see exactly where things lie.
Goals for 2018 include:
- Professionally: get a job that I love and that won’t burn me out, preferably in a place where my SO and I can both be happy
- Financially: front load my HSA and knock it out in six months instead of the usual twelve. Continue to save aggressively so that I can be at FI by age 40. Pad my emergency fund with an extra month or two of savings to allow me to take time off (see below).
- Personally: travel more! I’m aiming to take at least a couple of months off between finishing residency and starting my first job, and travel is going to be the number-one priority during that time. I see this as a mini-taste of what FIRE life will be like, and I can’t wait.
What are your goals for 2018?
