review 1: I recently read Andrew Pyper's novel The Killing Circle and I have to admit that I was not a huge fan but I decided to give this author another try and I am so glad that I did! I thought The Guardians was much better written (the plot was more intriguing, the characters better developed, the narration easier to follow, etc.). As well, this novel is more deeply rooted in the paranormal although it still is an intriguing "whodunit" mystery. Even though you hear about books and movies being so scary that they give people nightmares that has never actually happened to me until now. It takes an extremely powerful idea or description from a book to make it into the subconscious of your dreams and that is how scary this book is! Last night I had horrible dreams about a haunted ho... moreuse and what was in the "cellar". Although it was extremely unpleasant at the time (nobody enjoys having nightmares) I woke up thinking "Wow, bravo Andrew Pyper for making your Thruman's house real enough to penetrate its way into my dreams". It's a great book and a must read for anyone who enjoys scary mysteries. Be prepared to be spooked!
review 2: I was expecting this to be a lot scarier! I read a review about it in Libary Journal that made it seem like it was a horror through and through. To me it read like a crime drama/murder mystery with supernatural elements, and less so a straight-up horror. I think if I was expecting it to be a murder mystery I would have been less dissapointed. Overall great writing, interesting flawed characters, cool Ontario shout-outs, and moderately spooky. A very quick read. less

Book started off really good but slowed down about half way in. Still, not a bad little ghost story.

I thought it was a mystery. It's not! It's a ghost story. Be warned.

Pedestrian, dark, irresolute.
