review 1: Exciting thriller which sees Maeve involved in the investigation of a gruesome murder in Wimbledon. Her personal life seems to be flourishing but her sinister stalker is still at large to spoil things. I enjoyed this book and am only dropping to 3* because on reflection the content of the main story (involving twins, unknown half-siblings, incest and revenge) just seemed a bit too melodramatic and more the stuff of an old-fashioned romantic melodrama.
review 2: Bravo for Jane Casey! She has managed to get better with each book in her series. This is no small feat. In her first book, a character speaking in the first person lies to us, the readers. You expect the guilty party to lie to the police, but not to us the readers. In the second book, we were introduced
... more to the guilty party only a short time before they were exposed as guilty. This is a cardinal sin for people who like to try to solve the mystery as we read the story. Despite this complaint, I very much enjoyed her first two books, but not nearly to the degree that I enjoyed "The Last Girl". In this story, we are given a large, but manageable cast of suspects and the guilty party is among them all along. Much much better Ms. Casey. As always, I enjoy her characters who come off as very real and very human with all of their qualities and shortcomings. I don't even get tired of the "relationship" part of the plot. I hope Maeve Kerrigan pops up on my radar again sometime very soon. less
