Ginny Lurcock’s Thoughts: Let me set the scene. Day one of my period. I am tired, aching, and emotionally wrung out. It’s raining out. All I want to do is curl up in a little ball in my blanket cocoon and eat sugar, salt, and fat while reading. I acknowledge my backlog of Netgalley titles thanks to The Red, so I select the one from the author recommended to me by Bree of Kit Rocha fame.
I select the smutty romance novel recommended to me by one of my favorite smutty romance authors.
What could possibly go wrong?
I should have known from the very beginning with Aspen and Bram that there was going to be trouble. Sassy poor girl with family issues and an uptight man in a suit… with family issues. One who gets angry at how much he wants this woman he feels is all wrong for himself and his sister.
Angry and aroused.
My god, it sizzles. Right from the beginning, Kati Wilde’s writing held me captive. Acting as additives to my bloodstream, they threw me through the gambit of emotions. Joy bubbling like champagne bubbles, sexual tension licking like fire, self-doubt like tar, and pain like shards of broken glass.
Oh, this book made me bleed. Wilde described Aspen so well, told her plight with such conviction and beauty, that when the emotional climax of the book hit I was left crying in my room in the middle of the night. I tripped over my own self-worth and family issues, brought about by my empathy for this fictional character. I knew her pain and it broke my heart.
Which just made the payoff that much sweeter…
So while I might not recommend this book for anyone on the first day of their period, it’s a must read for romance fans.
