review 1: This was one of our book club summer reads, and maybe the timing was a little off for me. It is a well written book, but I found it too harrowing to recommend to anyone as a read. I don't mind a book which deals with difficult subject matter which might provoke thought and discussion or even challenge your views, but this book didn't seem to do that. I also didn't find myself identifying with any of the characters and felt no sympathy for anyone except Mina.
review 2: I had read the reviews of the book before picking it up for myself. I have been pleasantly awestruck by the simple narrative style. It felt reading into an art, the setting of Mir Ali is raw and very believable. The character portraits of Aman Erum impressed me specially. The author, Fatima Bhutto
... more holds a complete grip over the plot from the beginning till the end. I've sort of become a fan of hers. The Shadow... is one good read, truly. less
