review 2: This was an okay read. Nice and long, which I like, but really too long in some respects. I read some of the reviews here and agree with a couple that said there was descriptions galore about things really not relevant to the story, like what Caine bought at the store and not enough description of what it was Macklin was feeling. Being this was supposed to be a romance and the focus of the story really was that, I felt the story somewhat failed. Having only the one point of view is fine if the author can convey what the other is thinking in the actions that person takes and that has to include all characters, not just the main two. I think the author failed to do that in this case, especially with the MCs. The first kiss was completely out of the blue and so over the top for what had actually happened. To me, the "character" in Macklin I had seen up to this point would never have reacted the way the author had him react. It was almost as if "the kiss" was first instead of possibly building up to a point where that reaction made sense. Part of the problem for me was there was absolutely no chemistry in the pair which unfortunately continued throughout the book. There were times when the "romance" seemed good, the dialog between the two MCs, when they were alone together, was the okay part and why I rated this a three and not lower. I actually cheered Caine's stepping back when Macklin walked away after in the manner in which he did, after Caine was outed. In all reality, Macklin was not a likable character in my opinion. I actually liked the dominant trait in him and felt that was an "in character" thing for him (and quite sexy, I might add). But I also thought he was too moody, almost to the point of being an adolescent which, obviously, he was not, and, for me, that was an "out of character" thing for him. But I really did not like Caine's character either because he was too needy and incredibly irritating with his whiny attitude with Macklin. I can see the constant "think about me" whiny questions coming from a girl but really hated it coming from Caine. I think the author was trying to convey strength possibly? Maybe perseverance or intelligence? None of it worked for me. Then the idiocy of Caine saying to himself basically he needed to be patient then in the almost next breath being all pissy about Macklin not moving forward, really threw me out of the story. Plus I am sucker for endings. To me, they have to be big and can usually save a story for me. Once I read this incredibly boring book but I promised a friend I would and it took me forever to get through it and I was so afraid I was not going to have anything good to say about it. But the ending??? It was incredible. Beyond incredible. I now list that book as one of my favorites. THIS ending, to me, sucked. The fence breaking, admittedly not a huge part of the story, was so anti climatic it felt more like the author finally simply got bored with the story too. I just felt cheated. Yes, this was a free read. But that doesn't mean it shouldn't be great work. This one had elements of a good story, a good romance, but I felt it failed. But because I did enjoy pieces of it I still rated it a three. less
