Blade Runner: 2049 is one of the most perfect movies that I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of movies. I am usually not one to think about how visually stunning a movie is, but this film blew me away visually. It is beautiful. The colors, the movement of the camera, the way each scene is shot, it is just absolutely stunning to see.
To start, the storyline is exceptional, which I was slightly concerned about going into the movie, because the original is so good. The movie is almost 3 hours long, which is also something that I was unsure of before seeing it, because the original was just 2 hours. But the storyline in this movie was the perfect partner for the original, and was told slow, and methodically, which can only work if the story is interesting. Christopher Nolan reffered to this movie as a “suicide mission” because of how great the orginal movie is, but he said that director Denis Villeneuve knocked it out of the park. If Nolan is a fan, you can count me in for just about anything.
Secondly, the cast. What a freaking home run the cast for this was. Bringing back Harrison Ford is a no brainer, but then to add on Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright & Jared Leto, you basically cannot scew it up. Gosling was perfect for this role, much like he was for Drive, and La La Land, it just makes perfect sense to have him in here. Leto, also someone who could be the most talented person in show business if you add his musical talents, did such a great job in his role as Niander Wallace. It was odd, and creepy, yet perfect. There is not much to say about Robin Wright becuase she is perfect in every way. She should just be in everything that is made from here on out.
Villeneuve is slowly becoming a force in Hollywood as far as directing goes, because his filmography is as good as you can possibly get for someones first hand full of movies (Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario & Arrival). He is making great movies left and right, and even though hardly anyone is seeing these things it seems, he for sure has been added to my list of must see directors. One thing I love about his movies, is that they mess with your mind the entire time. You think this is happening and then the story changes, which makes watching his movies much more engaging than others would be. There are not many 3 hour movies that I would say are incredibly re-watchable, but Blade Runner: 2049 makes that short list for me. It is the perfect movie. Share this:
