Review

Timekeeper was one of my favourite reads of 2016 and a phenomenal debut. Tara Sim created a unique and enchanting world, one that is expanded on in Chainbreaker. In fact Chainbreaker takes everything I loved about Timekeeper and imbues it with even more magic. Chainbreaker sees higher stakes & and an even bigger mystery than Danny and Colton could ever see coming. And the pace does not slow nor does its hold on you let go for a second.

Matthias may be behind bars but for Danny, Colton and Daphne the trouble is just beginning. Our two resident mechanics are sent to India to investigate why there are clock towers falling without Stopping time. However it becomes clear very quickly it’s not as simple as it seems and there are forces after Danny that turn the investigation into a dangerous game and it’s not just Danny in danger.

“I’ll be back soon,” Danny said. “Wait for me.”

“I always do.”

After an attack on his tower, Colton is forced to make his way to London to find answers but a threatening note soon sees him racing to find Danny. But Colton is being plagued by increasingly disruptive dreams, bringing with them revelations that will shake the foundations of everything we think we know about the clock towers and their spirits.

Danny, Colton and Daphne really come into their own in Chainbreaker. Split up for large part of Chainbreaker we get to see the characters deal with the unfolding events as individuals. Daphne and Colton really shine, though we got a little of Daphne’s perspective in Timekeeper, Chainbreaker switches between the three of them regularly. The three different perspectives made this story, allowing the scope of the novel to be supported and the events fleshed out and explored.

Chainbreaker doesn’t let you go and, as the mysteries of the falling clock towers and Colton’s dreams unfold, it sinks it’s teeth deeper into you. Timekeeper was magic but Chainbreaker takes that magic and turns it into something truly spectacular. There is no second book/book 2 of 3 slump here. Just a gripping adventure that refuses to slow and events that change everything.

He took out the photograph of Danny’s smiling face.

“I’m sorry,” he said quietly. “I can’t wait for you this time.”

In particular the last third of the novel you won’t be able to put down as Danny, Daphne and Colton race against time to find each other while everything unravels around them. And that ending, I am speechless! I both desperately want book 3 and don’t want the series to end.

Chainbreaker is a pulse-pounding, heart-stopping adventure and an extraordinary follow up to Timekeeper.
