Book Review: “Clockwork Angels”

* * C

Clockwork Angels is a graphic novel based on the Rush album of the same name. It follows the adventures of Owen, a young man who leaves the life planned for him by the Clockmaker, the benevolent dictator of Albion, and follows his dream of seeing the world. Along the way, he becomes embroiled in a battle between the Clockmaker and his arch rival, the Anarchist, who seeks to free the people from the Architect’s rule.

I liked the book, but found it very allegorical. While Owen’s adventures are transformative, fundamentally changing his life, he is not a hero. The struggle between order (the Clockmaker) and chaos (the Anarchist) remains unresolved by the book, and has none of the grandeur of Michael Moorcock’s works, like Elric of Melnibone. Clockwork Angels is closer to Gulliver’s Travels than it is to any work of heroic fantasy.
