review 1: I can't believe I read the whole thing. Usually I quit quickly. In this case, though, the writer's voice seemed honest and straightforward (as it continued to be). Not trying to impress. I like that. But the big twin thing that we have been waiting for the whole book turns out to be not a very big thing, and it takes almost to the end of the book to discover this. Meantime, the main character is very hard to like. He's like an Ingmar Bergman character with no character traits. Just Norwegian farmer-ish. Dull. Unfeeling. That kind of thing. The other characters I didn't understand any better. They don't talk much either and have what are to me odd ways of getting their point across.
review 2: I read this book as it won the IMPAC Dublin literary award
... more 2010, this award is voted for by library reader so it is usually a good recommendation. A very unusual book which gripped me quietly! Nothing much happens in the book, yet so much is going on. Helmer and his father lead separate lives together trying to carry on despite the losses they have borne. A sad, grey book, but engaging none the less. less

Mooi geschreven, maar 't blijft toch een beetje Hollandsch geneuzel op de vierkante centimeter.
