Book Review: A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn

4 out of 5 Stars

Sorry! But I just couldn’t help but pick up another fairy tale retelling. Sleeping beauty this time…

The Blurb

Talia fell under a spell…
Jack broke the curse.

I was told to beware the accursed spindle, but it was so enchanting, so hypnotic…

I was looking for a little adventure the day I ditched my tour group. But finding a comatose town, with a hot-looking chick asleep in it, was so not what I had in mind.

I awakened in the same place but in another time—to a stranger’s soft kiss.

I couldn’t help kissing her. Sometimes you just have to kiss someone. I didn’t know this would happen.

Now I am in dire trouble because my father, the king, says I have brought ruin upon our country. I have no choice but to run away with this commoner!

Now I’m stuck with a bratty princess and a trunk full of her jewels…The good news: My parents will freak!

Think you have dating issues? Try locking lips with a snoozing stunner who turns out to be 316 years old. Can a kiss transcend all—even time?

My Thoughts?

I really wasn’t sure about this one at first.

It all starts with the spoiled, sheltered Princess Talia, pining away about how her parents are overprotective. Of course she gets a little taste of freedom and, surprise surprise, manages to fall under a curse that dooms her whole kingdom to 300 years of enchanted sleep.

Then throw Jack into the mix, a slacking teenage boy who’s upset that his parents sent him to Europe for the summer. Poor him. Along with his friend Travis, the two boys ditch their tour group and stumble upon a sleeping town. They find Princess Talia asleep in her tower and Travis dares Jack to kiss the girl even though she’s unconscious…

To say the least, I really disliked both characters in the beginning of the novel. Enough so that I almost put the book down, but I pushed through and I’m really glad I did.

This was really a coming of age story. It follows both characters through a difficult time in life, as young adults try to discover themselves–whether through travel, education, breaking parental chains, or following their dreams. The character development was great, allowing readers to see both teens mature throughout the books, gaining a greater understanding of their parents, the world, and their feelings for each other. By the end of the story I was really pulling for both Talia and Jack as well as the rest of the cast.

The writing style was fun and interesting. The story is told from first person point of view, alternating between Talia and Jack as the narrators. Each character has a very distinct and realistic voice that changes subtly throughout the story as the characters themselves grow and change. And although the novel touches on some serious topics, the dialogue and scenarios have a humorous twist that kept me laughing. Not to give away any spoilers, but the ending in particular was cheeky and sweet. I loved it!

Overall I really enjoyed A Kiss in Time and give it 4 out of 5 stars. If you’re looking for a fun modern retelling of Sleeping Beauty, give this one a shot!

Happy Reading!
