Book review: Knife’s edge, by Hope Larson, illustrated by Rebecca Mock

Larson, Hope. Knife’s Edge. Il. By Rebecca Mock. (Four Points series, #2) Margaret Ferguson/FSG, 2017. $19.99. 224p. ISBN 978-0-374-30044-9. Ages 11-14. P8Q7

The red-headed 12-year-old Dodge twins, Alexander and Cleopatra, are back from the graphic novel Compass South in another 19th-century marine adventure, this one to find a treasure after they understand the meaning of the knife and compass that their mother, Hester, has left them. On board the Almira, the twins, their adoptive father, and Captain Tarboro race the horrible pirate Felix Worley from the earlier book. Relationships among those on the ship show the frustration of Cleo at being forced into gender roles and the twins’ problems with the discovery that they have been adopted. Rich colors depict life on the wild seas in the tropics, and the action keeps readers asking for the next book.

Verdict: An advantage of the book is the revelation of the characters’ backstories.
