review 1: I'm late to the party on this series, and I cannot wait to read the rest.Kennedy nails location, terror and suspense, and undercover work. The book starts in a horrible moment and you know immediately that Abby Sinclair is a force. I love the relationship that formed and all the twists and turns, especially the confrontation scene at the end (woah!).Also, I can't be the only one who can't wait for the rest of the squad to find their matches -- especially Isabel and Trevor and Jim and Noelle.I work at Penguin, but that didn't influence this review.
review 2: A fast paced multi-viewpoint story, not afraid to take on disturbing themes. The female part of the main couple is Abby, the femme fatale style assassin who is also lethal in hand-to-hand combat is not your
... moretypical romantic lead. Her emotionally shut-down, personality coupled with her back story made for a well-developed character. Her love interest, Kane was a back story in search of a personalty. You learn very little about him, and his age and history do not mesh. While I could see why the two of them were intrigued with each other, I didn't get how they got to the "L" word. The main couple relationship got shortchanged because the book also had a secondary couple who got nearly as much time and whose relationship is still in its infancy. I actually found them the more intriguing couple and since their story is still two more books off, I expect it will be far more satisfying. There are also several other characters introduced, mostly male, who will, no doubt, eventually get their own book. I found the character D, who it is hinted at suffered sexual abuse to be the most intriguing but it looks like his story won't be forthcoming anytime soon. The story was well balanced between action sequences, and interpersonal drama. It was plausible in that over the top make believe sort of way. The only thing that really bugged me plotwise is that at the beginning we learn that Abby was hired to assassinate a drug lord, but threw the job in order to rescue some people he is holding. It was never explained why the two were mutual exclusive, and in fact logically the two goals seemed completely compatible. Since their rescue was the central plot of the book it was a really annoying oversight. I am still looking forward to reading the next book, though. less
