review 1: I absolutely love this series! I first discovered it four years ago and read all the available books consecutively, in one breathless week. Then I took a break, for a while - but with the publication of this tenth book, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to re-visit the series, by re-reading the first five books and then reading the next five all in a row. It has been enough years that the earlier books in the series felt brand new to me, as well. And I have really enjoyed these last few weeks spent reading them all! I just love Sagara's style and approach to the series - it is episodic in that for the most part, each installment has a completely contained plot. Though the later books are not quite as fully contained as the growing complexities of the character histori... morees demand that readers start from the beginning. And there have been some drastic changes over the past ten books for our characters. And they are all easy characters to love - Kaylin's humour makes the narrative fun and nicely breaks up the tension. Her relationships with others also adds to the series as a whole. This tenth volume is the first that opens a bit less immediately than the others - Kaylin has returned to Elantra and while she has not been back long, she is determined to find a new home - one that can accommodate having the only female Dragon as a roommate. And amidst the apartment hunting, Nightshade’s brother has also journeyed with them from the West March where he inadvertently sets another end-of-the-world plot into motion. As full as action as ever, this is an exciting and fast-paced read that truly leaves me breathless for the next installment (is Nightshade all right??? And the Emperor finally makes a personal appearance!!) - each time I finish one of these books, I just can't wait for the next - and after reading these back-to-back, I hope that the eleventh book isn't a long wait... I may just have to read it as soon as it is published instead of delaying it to enjoy in chunks like this time around!
review 2: Good: nice world building; intriguing charactersBad: books are episodic; no overarching plot that really ties the books together; Kaylin (protag.) hasn't really changed much since like the fourth book, and she's a pretty weak character because she's basically just reacting to stuff going on in her world; doesn't really take the initiative on anything; the books try to be deep and reveal some sort of epiphanic message, but really, it's pretty scattered. less
