In this almost wordless tale about a friendship that develops in the yards of two children, a young girl watches the boy who just moved into the next-door house as he takes planks from the fence to build a ladder up a tree. She offers her help, and the pen-and-ink grayness of their world adds tree foliage and yellow sky watercolors as the time passes with their building a treehouse. At nightfall, the children go to their respective homes and wave at each other. The artwork matches the handcrafted retreat.
Verdict: Charm and the development of a warm friendship make this a welcome addition to collections.
