Title: The Guerrilla Art Kit
Author: Keri Smith
Hey, everyone. Second book review of the month featuring Keri Smith’s “The Guerilla Art Kit,” another excellent guide to navigating the world through art and language.
“This book is intended to introduce guerilla art and its various formats and to serve as a launching pad for your own ideas and methods. Each exercise is intended as a prelude to a specific medium and will present you with a few ideas to get you started.”
Synopsis (from the back of the book):
Leave secret messages everywhere you go. Your ideas are interesting. Find yourself through recklessness and freedom. Revel in the idea of impermanence. Create your own world. Give back. Doodle. Listen. Stroll. Plant. Dance. Grow.
Experiment. Make connections.
What do you see? Be a tourist in your own life.
Onto the review:The book itself is a work of art with clear and impactful design. This an especially great guide if you’re familiar with artists like Banksy, but is not sure what he’s doing, why, or how. It’s an excellent guide with information on the history of guerilla art as well as some how-to’s with illustrations to go along.
CoverIf you are familiar with Smith’s other books, then you may know that the form her books take is a reflection of the topic she writes about. The Wander Society is nature guide while The Guerilla Art Kit is a step-by-step/how-to construction manual. Unlike The Wander Society, The Guerilla Art Kit is spiral bound.
“Guerilla art can be used to beautify or recreate a space that is soulless or without character and bring it new life.”Content
Smith provides you with everything you need in order to make art where you live. As ever, there’s lots of information where you can get general knowledge about the topic. She also provides web links for you to explore on your own, which is also very helpful. My favorite project will have to be making my own stickers and the Idea Dispenser (imagine a scotch tape dispenser and strips of paper written with ideas coming out of it).
If you need a reason to get crafty, The Guerilla Art Kit is a wonderful book for teens and adults. If you enjoyed Keri Smith’s other books, this book will not disappoint.
“There are three possible approaches to guerilla art: 1-beautifying – altering your surroundings 2-questioning – using your voice, challenging the status quo 3-interacting – with the environment or people”Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Check me out in two weeks, I’ll be reviewing another book. See the schedule here.
