review 1: There is nothing like a good, easy romance novel and Beatriz Williams does not disappoint. Though, I feel like I figured out the big "mystery" long before the author leads us to the climax, I really enjoyed the telling of this story. There were some surprises and the character development brings the story along to an intense, blustery end. I'd call this a perfect summer read. If you are in the mood for a quick escape read, this will do nicely.
review 2: This book came to me from a book group for parents raising Jewish children. It proved to be quite different from the other books proffered through this group. The author touches upon quite a few historic moments in history, including WWI, WWII, the Great Depression, Prohibition and the Hurricane of 1938 that
... morehit the east coast, especially New England. It was amazing how much young Americans smoke and drank hard liquor during that time period, even when driving and pregnant. This historical novel also touches upon interesting mother-daughter relationship psychology. The mention of anti-Semitism is sometimes subtle, and other times blatant. We also saw that one assumed that was the cause of one's actions when later we learned it was not the case. I found a message of not making assumptions about an individual's motives for their actions. I am still left with an unclear reason for Lily's Dad's reaction to Nick. Did he know that his wife was having an affair with Nick's father at the time that he first met Nick? Or was he upset that Lily was dating a Jewish man?I also cannot understand how the mother was able to put forth an illusion that she was the mother of Kiki when noone saw her pregnant and probably saw Lily during the 9 months, whom did not look pregnant.Part of the story focused on Lily being strong. But there are many instances in the story when Nick tells her to sit, to eat ...and she obeys.I thoroughly enjoy historical fiction and definitely did not want to put this one down. Some of it seemed too much of a forced happy ending and similar to many films from the 1930s. The Women comes to mind. That is not always a bad thing and sometimes we need it.Ironically, I read a good portion of it by candlelight snuggled with my two children as we weathered a recent storm that knocked our power out for many hours. less
