Roz Toovey is a physiotherapist, popular with her large client base and efficiently good at her job. Away from work, she is a single parent, left in serious debt by her ex-husband and struggling to make ends meet. When she meets Scott, a family friend, at her sisters barbecue, there is an instant and mutual attraction. But Scott is married, and that is a complication Roz can do without.
Scott, however, is not easily deterred. A rich businessman, he is unused to taking no for an answer, and offers Roz a lot of money for one night of adultery. Roz’s initial reaction is of shocked indignation, but as the debts pile up, she realises this may be her best chance to keep herself and her son off the streets.
The one-off night of adultery soon turns into a regular arrangement, until things take a darker turn and Roz realises she may have bitten off more than she can chew.
Set in the beautiful Lake District, this is very atmospheric, and also darkly humorous. Paula Daly’s writing style is extremely easy to read, and I finished this in a day – I couldn’t really put it down! The ending was slightly anti-climatic though, and certain characters faded into the background rather than receiving the comeuppance they deserved.
