review 1: The great thing about Hellboy is that, even though there's a larger story at play, Hellboy books usually are broken up into "Meanwhile" stories that break continuity. This is why Hellboy books always feel fresh, while at the same time we get introduced to exciting new characters, and learn more about Hellboy and what makes him tick exactly. It's hard to review Volume 11 on its own, because all Hellboy books read kind of the same, and that's a good thing. Here, we get stories such as Hellboys' Lucha Libre phase in the 50s, one of his few encounters with vampires, the Bride of Hell of course, and even a bizarre alien abduction in Arkansas. See what I mean when I say things are always fresh in Hellboy books? The one underlying theme in all Hellboy books is that Hellboy gets in... more a situation where he is told by a mysterious character that he just got himself so deeply in trouble that he just doesn't understand the consequences of his actions. It's always great seeing Hellboy brush these warnings off and show that most problems have a straightforward answer. Great artwork by Richard Corben too. Very R. Crumb-y with great use of thick shadows.
review 2: Too bad this wasn't all drawn by Richard Corben. I can't get enough of his art. Was a little surprised to see even an 8 page story actually drawn by Mignola, he hasn't done much more than covers for a while. For me, most Hellboy stories are variations on the same thing. Most of the pages are spent on setting a dreary tone, then Hellboy punches the monster without thinking things through, he gets shot or stabbed, and then somehow wins. These stories did all these things, but the plots were actually pretty fun. Only exception might be the Nowlan story, which was just a little random. Short of Fegredo returning to the title, this is the best that this series can get. less

I would point to this volume specifically, of Hellboy, to explain to outsiders why it is so great.

Never thought I'd feel bad for a demon but, oh man, this one hurt.
