Book Review: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Hey Guys!

Happy Sunday! It is time for another book review! and this time I am starting a new series! Whoop whoop! Is there any better feeling then finishing the first book in a series? I don’t think so. Anyway, the book in question today is, The Selection by Kiera Cass, so let’s do this.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I knew going into it that is was going to be a really light kind of fluffy read without much substance, but actually ended up quite enjoying it. There was more substance to it then I was expecting.

I will admit, it is very predictable. You know what is going to happen from the off. There aren’t really any big surprises or unexpected plot twists. It is a fairly straight forward story. But, there is more behind the story then I was expecting. There was a lot more politics in here then I was expecting, and I actually really liked that about it. it just added a layer to the story which made it feel a bit more grounded and possible. I don’t know. I just felt like it added something to an otherwise standard story.

The main thing that surprised me about this book though was the characters. I was surprised by how much I liked them. I was completely expecting the protagonist, America, to be shallow and self-centred and generally a bitch, but in reality she was the opposite. She is a very intelligent and genuine character who is kind and caring and honest. I liked that she wasn’t what I was expecting. I also really liked the way she interacted with Maxon. Again, I was expecting her to be a simpering, performing monkey around him, and she really wasn’t. She just treated him like a normal person. She shouted at him, told him off, was honest with him, joked with him. It was kind of refreshing to see a character who doesn’t fall apart around royalty.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I found myself smiling while reading it several times and really rooting for the characters. I will 100% be continuing with the series, even if it is pretty predictable where it is going to go.

And there we go. Have you read this series? What did you think about it? I hope that you have enjoyed todays post and I will see you all again very soon.
