review 1: I really liked this book. The question is, would I have liked it at the time it came out? It was very clear, around the time Dark Avengers/Uncanny X-men hit the shelves, everyone was feeling event fatigue. We went from Civil War to Secret Invasion, to Dark Reign. Seeing where the X-men are today, post Avengers VS X-men (hey wait, isn't that what this book is about?) it is fun to travel back to a time where Wolverine and Cyclops were still on the same team. What I found interesting in this collection was the amount of stories that ties a mutants power in with their mental illness. Sure, this topic has been discussed many times in the X-books, but this book was chock full of Schizophrenic characters, mutant and non mutant alike. The major draw for Thunderbolts (when N... moreorman Osborn ran the team) which was the same draw as Dark Avengers, was watching Sueprvillains pretend to be Superheros and have to fight their basic compulsion to do evil things. This book showed many scenarios where you didn't know if it was the power that made the person evil, or the person was evil and they had power. I really enjoyed it.
review 2: This could have been better, but was poorly written. The main story has some good ideas that start out well. But then the story is shifted to a bunch of conversations with Norman Osborn. After, that, we see a whole lot of characters get a few panels each. Very confusing to the reader, apparently even moreso to the writer. Fraction has trouble keeping the personalities straight and constantly dips into redundancy. I felt a relief when we moved into the Legacy issues because they focused on a few characters only and kept things well-paced and consistent. Unfortunately, this doesn't last too long as we move into the Dark X-Men issues. The stories in these issues are mostly about characters that no one cares about. There is a gay shower scene between Norman Osborn and Namor, if you are into gay shower scenes, then it might make these Dark X-Men chapters more interesting. less

The main story arc was decent, but the dozens of follow-ups were kinda pointless.
