When you are a Viral, trouble always seems to follow you. Every couple of months, you always seem to end up getting shot at, or arrested.
Don’t believe me? You can always go ask Tory, Ben, Hi, and Shelton of the Virals series.
Code is written by both Kathy Reichs, and her son Brendan Reichs, and it was published in 2013.
After the first two books in the Virals series, things seem to be looking up for our friends at the beginning of the third book Code.
Hi had purchased a metal detector because of his new hobby, Geocaching. While the other Virals think it is strange to be searching for random objects placed by random people (and sometimes you don’t even get a prize) Hi aims to be the first one to find the only Geocache placed out on Loggerhead Island.
Well, after searching Hi does find a Geocache that contains a coded note, and a creepy box with snarling clown stickers on it. A little creeped out, but not detoured, the Virals take the cache home with them to solve.
The solution to the first cache leads them to an abandoned island right off of Charleston’s coast, where the gang discovers a fancy iPad and a box that explodes.
The iPad then pops up with a red button…. and Hi presses it.
This red button set off a bomb in a park…. and though no one was killed, the Virals realize they are up against a mad man, and if they don’t solve his clues in time, they will have to pay the ultimate price.
Code marks a shift within the Virals series. Plenty of changes happen with this book, starting with the fact that the publisher redesigned the cover image.
Code is also the first book in the series to be written by both Kathy Reichs and her son, Brendan Reichs.
Changes happen within the novel as well.
The Virals start to discover more secrets about their illness, the biggest discovery being a forgotten flash drive belonging to the scientist who had created the Parvovirus that infected the Virals.
We start to see more of Chance Claybourne, who, after witnessing the Virals with their powers two separate times, becomes obsessed with finding out groups secrets.
One of the biggest changes within the book is the fact that Ben starts to develop romantic feelings for Tory. Ben’s love for Tory will drive him to betray the Virals in the worst way.
Code is an exciting and excellent third installment in the Virals series. Both Kathy and Brendan Reichs keep the plot of the series fresh with twists and turns that advance the plot of the novel and leave the reader guessing until the very end.
